The Songs Of Woodland Tea

Gasoline & Sunshine Dave McCann

Coyotes in the corn stubs, they'll burn her clean to stone,
You better listen to the wind now, she's better left alone.
Grass is growing from the cracks in the concrete,
Hiding out where the city birds hole.
There's a bone yard stretching out,
Between the broken circle and the red mud soul.

Chorus
You've got the Gasoline and the sunshine. The law that lays this land.
She'll chew her paw clean off now. And you don't understand, no you don't understand.

There's embers dying in the snow bitten rock ring,
the stars are calling up the day once more.
She's got the cedar rolling through the blood stream,
The city crumble bother me no more.
The mice they're hiding in the sides of their sorrow Blind and folded in the bullgrass green.
I've been wading in these frog broken waters,
In the shady shadow of the big machine.

You've got the Gasoline and the sunshine. The law that lays this land.
She'll chew her paw clean off now. And you don't understand, no you don't understand.

And we're riding in just shy of cyclone changes. We're riding in just light of cyclone times.
And we're riding in just shy of cyclone changes. We're riding in just light of cyclone times.

You've got the Gasoline and the sunshine. The law that lays this land.
She'll chew her paw clean off now. And you don't understand, no you don't understand.

Mattawa Dave McCann

I have walked this road before now, And here I'm walking it again.
I've been casting out for answers, Twisting through the whys and when.
As it shivers down to evening, A quiet burns across this land.
There's a stillness in her silence A faded calm to understand.

Chorus
I have seen Mattawa at midnight, And I have been talking with the wind.
I have seen Mattawa at midnight, Lay me down and blanket me again.

The highway's humming with the ticking of the engine, Held in straight time it settles down to hiss.
Tonight I'm here sleeping in the treeline, In a broken fog we've fallen through to this.

I've been dreaming every day it seems, something telling me to go.
The sky this side never fades, The stars here never lose there hold.
I have seen Mattawa at midnight, And I have been talking with the wind.
I have seen Mattawa at midnight, Lay me down and blanket me again.

Where'd I Turn Wrong Blues Dave McCann

Spend the day walking backwards river bound road. Take it down easy gonna take it down slow.
Roll, roll, roll, just rolling my time. Keep on rolling just to ease my mind.

Chorus
I got the jump down look around, where'd I turn wrong blues.
I got the jump down look around, where'd I turn wrong blues.

Got no money in my pocket got my life in my pack, Side thumbing sideways to keep me on track,
Roll, roll, roll, just rolling my way Keep on rolling till the break of day

I got the jump down look around, where'd I turn wrong blues.
I got the jump down look around, where'd I turn wrong blues.

Muskellunge Dave McCann

Surrounding Green Dave McCann/ Larry Chrismas.

It's a dark wind a blowing up the seam on this mountain, in this cold November fog.
The sun climbs Quintette in a half day break from the rain.
One more load and the train jacks 'er down to Ridley by the sea.

Chorus
I stare to green, I stare to green, Surrounding Green.
I've seen enough of the Quintette mine, and they've seen the last of me

The river cuts a twisted blue dry line up this valley to Tumbler Ridge.
Where the raven flies half as black as the coking coal we drive.
The moon lights the train, as it shivers down the mountain to makin' steel for the Japanese.

I stare to green, I stare to green, Surrounding Green.
I've seen enough of the Quintette mine, and they've seen the last of me

I lost my wife to Vancouver and a tree hugging daughter and I almost lost my mind.
Now I rest just a cold stone throw away from her smile.
The clouds roll in off the old Murray river with the last of the mountain's broken flow.

I stare to green, I stare to green, Surrounding Green.
I've seen enough of the Quintette mine, and they've seen the last of me

Canary Down, the wind has fallen,
Canary Down, and the train is calling,
Canary Down, I stare away , from the coking coal

City Lights Dave McCann

There's a Ghost wind pulling in here tonight, The horses tucked up fine, and holding up all right.
The stars our companion, a fire stands to slide, And we're burning songs we ain't heard around here in a while.

Chorus
So grant us some peace, let the world sleep tonight,
There ain't no rest for the graveyard dogs And there ain't no city lights.

There's a sparrow hiding in the Toothpoke Pines, Where the river turns to road & where the path unwinds.
And with her stone to hold, to keep her from the cold, And she's so quick to burn in the circle fire.

So grant us some peace, let the world sleep tonight,
There ain't no rest for the graveyard dogs And there ain't no city lights.

In the hills a distant light comes shining, The flames lick up and catch this night is song.
And it's taken me this long, to come this far, and I feel like going home.

So grant us some peace, let the world sleep tonight,
There ain't no rest for the graveyard dogs And there ain't no city lights.

Pocket of Love Dave McCann

She is a cave bear a quiet and calling Out to a night that's a far cry from cold.
The stars start to fold in the cloud's crazy laughter And I am a dreamer a long ways from home.

And hey there my Molly and you're such a traitor A fire breathing rascal, so out of control
And I dreamed that I saw you with wings high above us, Laughing along with the old mountain wolves.

The rain burns a hole clear through the concrete Like talk, love is cheap, you must give it away.

As we go further, the song just gets louder, We're a long ways off from a smile on the sun,
Those troubles & tears the come on like lightning, But we'll hang em, for now to dry on that line.

Troubles & tears the come on like lightning, But we'll hang em, for now to dry on that line.

Left Behind Dave McCann

I heard it said we got left behind, and we best catch up soon.
and I've been dreaming down the other lane , with that big old yellow moon.
And if I don't catch up soon enough, I'm gonna settle in this place.
It's hard enough to find a girl to help you run your race.

Chorus
You take a hard look around, thing are going easy.
You take a hard look around, things are going fine.

Now I've been colouring outside the lines with a smile on my face,
Hanging down with all them crooked weeds cause the flowers hate this place.
And if I don't catch up with her, I'm gonna settle down too late,
It's hard enough to find a friend too help you pull the weight.

You take a hard look around, thing are going easy.
You take a hard look around, things are going fine.

Sun Dried Wine Devils Dave McCann

I got a friend down in Milbrooke pen, five and dime broke down its five to ten.
And I can see those sad green pennies in his eyes we felt the good side to all the worlds lies.

Ya he drinks too much, Ya he thinks too much And his courage shrinks enough,
and he's sliding ... down, down, down

My woman in a sun down bottle blur craze, Sun dried wine devils sing in their graves.
And she left those sailors all swirling in the rain, we felt the good side to all the worlds pain.

Ya she needs enough, Ya she reads too much And she fleas from me enough,
and she's sliding ... down, down, down

We need devolution, no quick fast solution. More wine mind pollution?

I got a friend down in Milbrooke pen, five and dime broke down its five to ten.
And I can see those sad green pennies in his eyes we felt the good side to all the worlds lies.

Grain Car Dave McCann

I used to go down the rail yards in Calgary with an artist buddy Rob Daoust to drink a
few Guinness on the tracks! Rob has some great stories about train rides out of the Kootenies!
I wrote him this song! He gave me some art!

Trade in the red wine for old roads that roll by and faces that smile like you used to know.
Your last kiss it burns in, places I can't win, but if I, if I get Back here again some day.

Chorus
Like a rich man on the mountain, like a dog in his dying day,
the storm she rolls right in, right in through the open gate.
You can't keep warm on a grain car, the good is get when the gettin's gone,
the sky tonight my friend is singing a different song.

Why things are changing, faces look strange and I don't feel all that fit now to complain.
Doubt raises answers, you question the cancers, you set yourself, set yourself back there from the line.

Like a rich man on the mountain, like a dog in his dying day,
the storm she rolls right in, right in through the open gate.
You can't keep warm on a grain car, the good is get when the gettin's gone,
the sky tonight my friend is singing a different song.

Old thoughts they burn me, clearly I can't see, all these here thoughts that blow this circle down.
The old wind a blowing, train starts to rolling, I best hold on this ride gonna last all night.

Like a rich man on the mountain, like a dog in his dying day,
the storm she rolls right in, right in through the open gate.
You can't keep warm on a grain car, the good is get when the gettin's gone,
the sky tonight my friend is singing a different song.

Circle of Stones Dave McCann

Hanging in the hills is a broken song, the tree's howling out back all night long.
Weather's blowing in saying you don't care, For a town we don't belong in.

These Black Ash Hills just dont seem right, Big wing bugs round the front porch light.
Feel the trace of something long gone wrong, In a town we don't belong in.

Chorus
There's a fire in the belly of the world tonight. Through the rythm of the circle of stones.
There's a fire in the belly of the world tonight. She lets her heart keep time & then some.

Sun bleached bones from the truth of tears, She's been hiding in these hills for the last 2 years.
There's a fire in her eyes that she can't hide For a town we don't belong in.

There's a fire in the belly of the world tonight. Through the rhythm of the circle of stone.
There's a fire in the belly of the world tonight. She lets her heart keep time & then some.

Farm Dog Free Dave McCann

These flowers keep me holding on to the thought of you,
And all those times you brought me through.
Your like the wind through the corn, On a stormy morn in June.

Chorus
Farm dog free, you send me. Farm dog free you send me.

These starry nights keep me tracing down your broken side.
And all that fear gone that your eyes just can't hide.
Your like the wind through the corn, On a stormy morn in June.

Farm dog free, you send me. Farm dog free you send me.

Tail between, running mean, outta time,
Drunk at best, ain't no rest, for you and me.
Your like the wind through the corn, on a stormy morn in June.

Farm dog free, you send me. Farm dog free you send me.

Waiting at the Threshold Dave McCann

Well I'm waiting at the threshold, and I'm waiting for the rain.
And I'm waiting for your love and the storm and the flood to rise again
And you will never , never, never know what you mean to me.
Cause your out their touching souls, and all the souls you touched are free.

Well I'm waiting at the threshold, and I'm waiting for the rain.
And I'm waiting for your love and the storm and the flood to rise again
And you will never , never, never know what you mean to me.
Cause your out their touching souls, and all the souls you touched are free.

Chorus
Won't you run, run, run, run, run, run with me. Won't you fly, fly, fly, fly, we'll be free.
And you will never figure it out, and your so sick with doubt, and you will never figure me out, she smiled.

Well I'm waiting at the threshold , and I'm waiting for the rain.
And I'm waiting for your love and the storm and the flood to rise again
And you will never , never, never know what you mean to me.
Cause your out their touching souls, and all the souls you touched are free.

Won't you run, run, run, run, run, run with me. Won't you fly, fly, fly, fly, we'll be free.
And you will never figure it out, and your so sick with doubt, and you will never figure me out, she smiled.

Well I'm waiting at the threshold, and I'm waiting for the rain.
And I'm waiting for your love and the storm and the flood to rise again.
